Why Can’t I Sleep? 7 Surprising Reasons You’re Lying Awake

Introduction

It’s 1 AM, and you’re staring at the wall again, asking yourself that familiar question: “Why can’t I sleep?” You’re exhausted, yet your mind refuses to quiet down. If this sounds like your nightly reality, I want you to know you’re not alone. In my work as a sleep coach here in Dubai, I’ve helped countless professionals just like you uncover the real reasons behind their sleeplessness, and they’re often more surprising than you’d think.

1. Your Evening Screen Time Is Sabotaging You

I know that late-night email check feels necessary, but here’s what’s happening: the blue light from your screen is suppressing your melatonin production and confusing your circadian rhythm. Your body can’t tell if it’s day or night, making it nearly impossible to drift off naturally.

2. You’re Actually Too Tired to Sleep

This might sound contradictory, but I see it all the time. When you push through exhaustion all day, your body releases stress hormones like cortisol to keep you going. By bedtime, these hormones are still elevated, creating that “tired but wired” feeling that so many of my clients describe.

3. Your Bedroom Is Too Warm

Living in Dubai, we depend on air conditioning, but I need to tell you something important: if your room is above 19°C (66°F), it’s interfering with your sleep. Your body needs to cool down slightly to initiate sleep, and a warm room prevents this natural process.

4. You’re Not Managing Stress During the Day

Stress doesn’t disappear when you climb into bed, I wish it did! Unprocessed worries and anxieties resurface the moment your head hits the pillow. Without daytime stress management, your mind treats bedtime as processing time, which leads to chronic insomnia.

5. Your Caffeine Window Is Too Wide

That afternoon coffee at 3 PM? I hate to break it to you, but it’s still in your system at bedtime. Caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours, meaning half of it remains in your body long after. This subtle stimulation can prevent the deep, restorative sleep you desperately need.

6. You’re Exercising at the Wrong Time

I love that you’re staying active, but evening workouts might be working against you. Vigorous exercise within three hours of bedtime raises your core temperature and adrenaline levels, both of which prevent sleep.

7. Your Sleep Schedule Is Inconsistent

Going to bed at different times each night is one of the biggest sleep disruptors I see. Your body thrives on consistency, and an irregular schedule confuses your circadian rhythm, making it difficult for your body to know when to release sleep-promoting hormones.
